Journey times from Ibiza to Formentera
All the boats going to Formentera are of a good standard. When it comes to choosing one you should consider whether you are taking a vehicle with you. Boats that carry vehicles usually take between 40 and 60 minutes, whereas other boats only carry passengers.
There are four companies that make this journey. Balearia, Transmapi, Mediterranea Pitiusa and Aquabús. Aquabús does the crossing in smaller boats and takes about 40 minutes, making them more economical, so they are referred to as the low-cost shipping company.
The other companies have larger boats, fast ferries, that take 30 minutes and can accommodate many more passengers.
In short, reaching Formentera will take between 30 and 60 minutes, a simple, comfortable journey which is completely safe.
Crossing Frequency
The Ibiza-Formentera route has a lot of maritime traffic as it is the only way to access the island. Therefore, there is an abundant supply of boats. There are boats from 7 am to 12 pm, every half hour during the the season, from May to October. Out of season, there are fewer crossings, but there are one or two boats almost every hour so you should not worry about whether there will be enough space on the boat, etc.

What time should I book the transfer for?
When booking your transfer, you need to take into account the boat’s departure time (which is usually very punctual) as well as the crossing time, as explained above:
- Boats carrying vehicles, approximately 1 hour.
- Boats that only carry passengers, approximately 30 minutes.
The bus stop for transfers in Formentera is located just behind the Ferry terminal, a 4-minute walk from where the boat departs.
Therefore, for example, if boat departure time is 10:00 then your expected arrival time, if it is a passenger ferry – which it usually is – will be about 10:30, so you would be able to catch the 11:00 transfer bus.
However, if your boat is one which carries vehicles and your departure time is 10:00, the arrival time will be about 11:00 and you will be able to catch the 11:30 transfer bus.
